[New Products] Apple Announces iLife ’11, Mac OSX Lion, FaceTime, & MacBook Air

October 21, 2010  |  Apple, I want.., New Products

D-day has finally arrived and it couldn’t have brought with it any more beautiful presents, this year I think Christmas is early (or rather the holidays for those that don’t celebrate Christmas) Apple has given us a couple of beautiful products and the one I am excited mostly about is the MacBook Air, Mac OSX Lion, and FaceTime for Mac (kinda means everything doesn’t it?).  So what happened and what went down? Let’s get cracking!

1. iLife ’11

It’s been a while since it was last updated and  the updates look awesome, we have iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand getting some new features of which are listed below.  iPhoto can now be seen in a new full-screen mode (getting it ready for OSX Lion I guess) editing can’t get any easier and beautiful than that, there are FaceBook & Flickr enhancements make it easier to upload pictures, emailing photos with templates and multiple templates, not to forget a new slideshow feature that makes everything look beautiful and exactly what one would expect from their Mac.   The updates don’t stop there because the Book creation tools get even easier to edit and we get new Books and card creations (who said you can’t send a personal card anymore) iPhoto looks like it has some good options.  Next on the list is iMovie, some of the new features include new audio changes to audio levels and audio effects, you now have a people finder (Find faces like iPhoto’s feature), there are new video effects (slow motion, flash and hold last frame [ which is cool very cool]), there are now 15 movie trailer templates in which you can fill in titles, dates, cast and put up logos, you’ve got a story board tab to edit your movies, and last but not least you can now screen your movies to your iPad, iPhone, iPod, and AppleTV as well as Facebook and YouTube.  Garageband gets the next updates: it gets flex time which allows music to be stretched and tightened without changing pitch, groove matching, more guitar amps & effects, new piano & guitar lessons, and a “How did I Play” jamming lessons.  I was never a fan of Garageband but it sure makes it more enticing to learn to use it.

iLife ’11 is available today, free with any new Mac, and an upgrade for $49.

2. FaceTime on Mac

Next on the list was the newly-popular FaceTime, your way into Video calling from iOS devices to iOS devices (iPhones, iPod Touches).  Ever since it’s introduction back in July 19 million FaceTime ready devices were sold in the past four months, it was time for them to integrate the experience over to the Mac.  Now you can FaceTime your Mac Users and enjoy it, all it requires is Mac OSX SnowLeopard and its easy to set up with an Apple ID.  The public beta is available for download immediately today for free.  Definitely can’t wait to try it out.

3. Mac OS X Lion:

Next on the list was the biggest thing ever, it’s the latest 8th release of the OS X operating system from Mac and it’ll be called “Lion” hear it roaaaaar! In the words of Steve Jobs it’s when Mac OS X meets iOS.  The need to unify the image of Apple has always been a priority and Lion does exactly that.  This new OS will ship in summer 2011 and offer a range of new features that have been integrated from iOS such as: App Store for Mac, Multi-touch gestures, App Home Screens, Full Screen Apps, Autosave, Apps resume when launched.  Steve told us that touchscreens aren’t the way to go when it comes to working on our Macs but the touch interface will be through the trackpad or Magic Mouse as it might get painful after a while.   The App Store will work exactly like the iOS App Store in which applications are split by categories, updates, and so on.  There will be a new unified way of navigating that unifies Expose, spaces and the dashboard which will be called “Mission Control” it’ll let you easily find all the windows, widgets and apps running on your mac in one place and allow you to flick through just like the iPad.  This will be the next generation of OS X and seriously what better way to welcome the beginning of a new decade than to lay out an Operating System that even Windows can’t attempt to duplicate in time.

Unfortunately it won’t be available until Summer 2011 but here is hoping it gets an earlier release.

4. MacBook Air:

The event was about to end but it can’t end without the “One More Thing” we are always promised from Steve Jobs.  This year it came in the packaging of a MacBook Air.  “What would happen if a MacBook & iPad hooked up?” that’s the question we were asked and the answer came in the packaging of the MacBook Air.  The beautiful re-designed MacBook Air that has Instant On, a great Battery life, 30 days of standby time, SSD storage, thinner and lighter, and comes in 2 different sizes 11.6 inches and 13.3 inches.   In Apple’s terms it’s up to 2 times faster and more reliable than the previous models and is 90% smaller and lighter.  In my terms, it’s simply BEAUTIFUL!  This device is only 0.68inches at its thickest point and 0.11 inch at its thinnest with the 13 inch model weighing 2.9 pounds and the 11.6 inch model weighing 2.3 pounds.  Not only that but the battery life on the 11.6 inch model has up to 5 hours Wireless Web surfing and 30 day standby, while the 13 inch model has up to 7 hours Wireless Web surfing and also a 30 day standby.  This baby is available immediately today and should be in my hands sometime in the next coming weeks I need to just shift some cash from my Swiss Bank Accounts (yeah as if!) the specs are mentioned below as well as their prices.
